Skin problems related to hyper-pigmentation are generally the end result of the defence system of our skin, caused from UVR and other forms of topical and internal inflammation. It is a reactive response of damage being inflicted on the skin cells.
Listed below are some types of pigmentation:
Freckles – little brown spots due to high sun exposure and unprotected sun exposure.
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation – pigment that comes up post inflammation or injury to the skin. This can be caused from acne, skin abrasions, burns, excess heat and wrong treatment choices.
Melasma or Chlorasma (Mask of Pregnancy) – this is triggered by hormones, internal inflammation and stress. This is a very common condition amongst pregnancy or those on medication that affects hormones (oral contraceptive pill and progesterone based medications).
Liver Spots – spots of dark pigment with rounded or uneven edges. This is due to excess sun exposure and is very common in people over the age of 50.
